Carved images and sculptures, which spend the rest of the year kept in basilicas and churches, are decorated with candles, flowers, and richly embroidered shawls for the processions that take them through emblematic places such as the Paseo del Prado, Calle Alcalá, and the Plaza Mayor. During the processions, they will be accompanied by dozens of penitents and borne aloft by costaleros, members of the different religious guilds.
Two of the most important processions that take place on Palm Sunday and the Wednesday before Easter are Cristo de la Fe y el Perdón and Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud. The 1st sets off from the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel, and the second one makes its way around the streets surrounding Puerta del Sol (starting and finishing in Calle de la Salud, and going through Puerta del Sol, Plaza de Jacinto Benavente, the church of Santa Cruz and Calle Mayor). On Easter Sunday, religious guilds accompanied by drums take part in the traditional Tamborrada Maña at the Plaza Mayor, which commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ 3 days after his death.
On the occasion of the celebration of the 4th Centenary of the Plaza Mayor, sacred music is scheduled to accompany the Easter week From the balcony of the Casa de la Panadería, 4 Andalusian singers "cantaoras" will perform traditional songs on Friday, March 30 at 8pm. Moreover, during the Holy Week you have a great chance to get to know some spectacular temples in the capital, such as the Cathedral of Castrense or el Sacramento, San Antonio de los Alemanes, San Francisco el Grande or San Pedro el Viejo. At this time, some churches in the center offer Easter music concerts with free admission.
As it is common for religious celebrations, Easter in Madrid is accompanied by a lot of traditional dishes such as torrijas, a sweet treat made using bread soaked in milk with cinnamon, then fried and sprinkled with sugar.
